Twisted split-ring-resonator photonic metamaterial with huge optical activity
Coupled split-ring-resonator metamaterials have previously been shown to
exhibit large coupling effects, which are a prerequisite for obtaining large
effective optical activity. By a suitable lateral arrangement of these building
blocks, we completely eliminate linear birefringence and obtain pure optical
activity and connected circular optical dichroism. Experiments at around
100-THz frequency and corresponding modeling are in good agreement. Rotation
angles of about 30 degrees for 205nm sample thickness are derived.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

The FORTRAN static source code analyzer program (SAP) user's guide, revision 1
The FORTRAN Static Source Code Analyzer Program (SAP) User's Guide (Revision 1) is presented. SAP is a software tool designed to assist Software Engineering Laboratory (SEL) personnel in conducting studies of FORTRAN programs. SAP scans FORTRAN source code and produces reports that present statistics and measures of statements and structures that make up a module. This document is a revision of the previous SAP user's guide, Computer Sciences Corporation document CSC/TM-78/6045. SAP Revision 1 is the result of program modifications to provide several new reports, additional complexity analysis, and recognition of all statements described in the FORTRAN 77 standard. This document provides instructions for operating SAP and contains information useful in interpreting SAP output
The Railroad’s Impact on Land Values in the Upper Great Plains at the Closing of the Frontier
We show that the impact of transportation improvements on land values is complex with a direct, positive relationship on the price of land and also a positive relationship with the ratio of improved acres to total acres, another important influence on the per acre price of land. We construct a two step estimation that removes the impact of transportation outlets on the ratio of improved to total acres before including the transportation variables and the adjusted ratio variable as independent variables in a regression on price per acre. This estimation gives us the expected positive impact of railroads on land price. We also use Box-Cox regressions to show the semi-log form, a common model specification, may be inappropriate for our data and possibly then for other land price research.Box-Cox, Railroads, Great Plains
Environmental Inspection Proclivity and State Manufacturing Growth: The US Experience from the 1990s
In this paper we construct a ranking of states based on their proclivity to inspect facilities for environmental compliance. Our measure utilizes state-level inspections data supplied by the US Environmental Protection Agency. After developing our ranking, we use it to predict state-level growth in manufacturing establishments. In doing so, we find support for the notion that enforcement intensity adversely impacts such growth. Our results offer insight into why existing studies that examine the impact of environmental regulation on location and growth produce inconsistent results.Monitoring and Enforcement, Environmental Regulations, Business Formation Growth
THE IMPACT OF POSTTRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER ON PERIPHERAL VASCULAR FUNCTION
The physiological manifestations of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been associated with an increase in risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) independent of negative lifestyle factors. Peripheral vascular dysfunction may be a mechanism by which PTSD increases CVD risk via increases in oxidative stress, inflammation, and/or sympathetic nervous system activity. PURPOSE: This study sought to examine peripheral vascular function in those with PTSD compared to age-matched controls. METHODS: Eight individuals with PTSD (5 women, 3 men; age 22 ± 2 years), and sixteen healthy controls (CON; 10 women, 6 men, 23 ± 2 years), participated in the study. Leg vascular function was assessed via passive leg movement (PLM) technique and evaluated with Doppler ultrasonography. PLM-induced increases in leg blood flow were quantified as peak change in blood flow from baseline (ΔPeak LBF) and blood flow area under the curve (LBF AUC). RESULTS: Significant differences in leg vascular function were revealed between groups. The PTSD group reported significantly lower ΔPeak LBF (PTSD: 294.16 ± 54.16; CON: 594.78 ± 73.70 ml∙min-1; p = 0.01) and LBF AUC (PTSD: 57.23 ± 24.37; CON: 169.92 ± 29.84 ml; p = 0.02) when compared to the CON group. CONCLUSION: This study revealed that lower limb vascular function is impaired in individuals with PTSD when compared to healthy counterparts.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/gradposters/1043/thumbnail.jp
Weyl node with random vector potential
We study Weyl semimetals in the presence of generic disorder, consisting of a
random vector potential as well as a random scalar potential. We derive
renormalization group flow equations to second order in the disorder strength.
These flow equations predict a disorder-induced phase transition between a
pseudo-ballistic weak-disorder phase and a diffusive strong-disorder phase for
sufficiently strong random scalar potential or for a pure three-component
random vector potential. We verify these predictions using a numerical study of
the density of states near the Weyl point and of quantum transport properties
at the Weyl point. In contrast, for a pure single-component random vector
potential the diffusive strong-disorder phase is absent.Comment: published version with minor change
Voyager 1 and 2 measurements of radial and latitudinal cosmic ray gradients during 1981 - 1984
The cosmic ray radial gradient was determined during 1981-84 using data from very similar detectors onboard spacecraft Voyagers 1 and 2 (radial separation approx. 6 AU, heliolatitude separation approx. 25 deg.) and from the Earth-orbiting satellite IMP 8. The principal result is that the radial gradient over this period decreased at the rate approx. 2.0%/AU between 1 and 16 AU and approx. 0.6%/AU between approx. 16 and 22 AU
